Firefox Add-on: Spiders to Kittens

This Add-on does what it says on the tin. It replaces images of spiders with those of cute kittens (->download). For each of you, who is not so fond of seeing those eight legged web builders.

Where the idea came from

This was the result of an idle Saturday morning breakfast conversation. Someone mentioned that they were surprised by a spider image in the news. And with them not being terribly fond of looking at spiders, I figured that it might be useful to create a simple browser extension to make their world a little more cute.

How it works

Spider detection is completely keyword-based. This means that the Add-On looks at the image name, title and alt-text for a list of spider-related terms.

In addition to that it also checks if an image is used as a link to a spidery site.

This is the result of a Google Image Search for the term „spiders“

This approach works surprisingly well for spider detection.

Oh and a lesson learned: Pictures of spiderman are not replaced. ;)

Privacy

A major advantage of this simple and straight forward approach is, that the Add-On is fully self contained. That means, no connections to other servers leaking your information, no creepy profile building. Yes, even the pictures already in the package.
